REPORT ON THE 21ST  NATIONAL SPM BIBLE KNOWLEDGE ORAL QUIZ 2017

2017 has been a great year, thanks be to God! The Lord opened more doors for the BK Quiz.  The Regional Quizzes were held on 8th July at 13 regional centres: 6 full Quiz centres and 7 BK17 only centres. The 1st Central Regional Oral Quiz and BK 17 for the states of KL, Selangor and Pahang was held at St John’s Institution.  The BK 17 only centres are Sandakan, Sibu, Bintulu, Kluang, Penang, Seremban and Labuan. Total participation at Regional levels was 1843 students! More than 500 personnel (teachers/students/helpers) voluntarily helped  in working committees.

SPM BK Upskilling seminars were held in 4 centers: Melaka, KL, Miri and Kota Kinabalu. 4 trainers: Mdm Jagan Anand, Miss Tay Bee Lian, Mdm Catherine Chia and  Mdm Chua Ping Ching. More than 220 students and  30 BK teachers attended these seminars.

The judges for the Oral Quiz were Miss Moey Yoke Lai (Chief), Mdm Jagan Anand, Mr Daniel Pan, Miss Anne Mathews, Miss Emily Lingam and Mr Yoshua Chua.

This year, a new format was introduced at the Oral Quiz. It had 4 Rounds and was more enjoyable as well as challenging.

Archbishop Julian Leow and several MCSC Exco members were present at the Quiz and presented prizes to the winners. The Archbishop closed the event with a prayer and benediction at 1.15pm.

The National Level SPM BK Quiz was held at SMK Assunta, Petaling Jaya on 5th August 2017. The host school committee led by Madam Shanthy Balakrishnan had made excellent preparation for the event. Prior to quiz day, two large banners, sponsored by Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) were put up at the school. The printing of the programme books was also sponsored by MCKL. The banners matched the bright royal blue T-shirts worn by teachers and students  The t-shirt design was by Methodist College and the t-shirts were sponsored by MCSC.

It was a bright and happy morning as participants, teachers and parents arrived as early as 6.15am! Breakfast was provided for all at the school canteen, thanks to the generosity of MCSC. The event began with the assembly at Dataran Assunta. Mr Yap Kok Keong, past Chairman of MCSC said the opening prayer. This was followed by the welcome address by Miss Moey Yoke Lai, Chairman of the Malayan Christian Schools’ Council (MCSC).  A special BK Promotion was done by Mr Yoshua Chua, who inspired the students to take BK seriously. Next was a time of Praise and Worship led by the team from the Sri Sempurna International School.

The SPM BK teams then proceeded to the Sister Enda Hall for the Oral Quiz while the BK 17 participants did the BK 17 National Quiz at the Mutiara Block. The 27 BK teams were the winners from the 6 Regional Quizzes. It was a blessing to see teams from all over the country:  A total of 360 participants from Form 1 to 6  from Selangor, KL, Seremban, Tanjong Malim, Sandakan and Kuching participated in the BK 17 Quiz. Total Quiz Day attendance was 414.

For the BK 17 Quiz, the top 10 winners for every Form (Form 1 to 5) and  5 winners in the Veteran (Form 6 and College) category were awarded trophies.
